  • Key Lime Pie Tragedy

This is what happens when you don't thoroughly read a recipe .....

    Key Lime Pie Disaster!

I thought it'd be nice to prepare a key lime pie for my folks arrival tomorrow as I had bought fresh key lime juice while in California. So I mix the milk, eggs and juice and pour them into the graham cracker pie shell. And into the oven it goes.

It's busy baking away and is supposed to go 15 minutes at 350°.  Fine.  But after the 15 minutes tick away the blessed pie is still real runny ... damn thing hasn't set. Okay, fine, I'll bake it a further 15 minutes ... cause I'm thinking, it must be my oven, really slow.

    tick tick tick

Done. But horror! ... it's still all a jiggly and runny. So I consult G, a far better chef than I. G immediately asks to see the recipe.

"Hmmmm, let me see the milk can," he asks.

I retrieve the can from the trash.

"Condensed milk Brent! ... you've used evaporated milk!" (laughs)

    "Oh," say I.

    Lesson learned.

    Damn.
